BYD Atto 1: A Short, Sweet Electric Car Ride
For years, the electric car debate has been dominated by one argument: they're too expensive for the average buyer. But with the rise of affordable electric vehicles, that argument is becoming increasingly outdated. And the BYD Atto 1, a new entry in the Australian market, is set to challenge that notion head-on.
Starting at a surprisingly competitive $23,990 before on-road costs, the Atto 1 is a game-changer. It's not a flashy, premium SUV or a tech-laden showcase; it's a practical, everyday hatchback that sits right in the heart of the market. This is the kind of car that everyday buyers are actually interested in.
Despite its affordable price tag, the Atto 1 doesn't feel like a compromise. I took one for a half-hour test drive, and it didn't feel flimsy or unpleasant. It's a front-wheel-drive car, which gives it a slight nose-heavy feel, but it's also calm and predictable, just what you'd expect from a small, affordable hatchback.
The Atto 1's design might remind you of a toy Lamborghini Urus, but it's a relief to discover that it doesn't feel like a toy inside. The interior is modern, clean, and recognizably BYD, with a design that borrows from the Dolphin and Atto 3, but scaled down and simplified.
However, the Atto 1's affordability comes with some trade-offs. It lacks some basic features that modern cars should have, like wireless phone charging, rain-sensing wipers, power-folding side mirrors, and front parking sensors. These omissions might be a deal-breaker for some buyers.
The base model's 220-kilometer range is a bit limiting for anything beyond city driving, but the premium model's 43kWh battery offers a more reassuring 330 kilometers. The base model's 0-100km/h time of 9 seconds is respectable, but it's not a sports car. The premium model is slightly slower at 11 seconds.
Despite its limitations, the Atto 1 is a significant step forward in the electric car debate. It proves that a very cheap electric car can feel normal and practical. In a market where EVs were once seen as luxury items, this might be the most disruptive feature of all. The Atto 1 challenges the notion that electric cars are only for the wealthy, and that's a conversation worth having.
