From Disney Snub to Professional Golfer: Ffion Tynan's Unique Journey
A Unique Passion Ignited at Eight
Ask any eight-year-old in the world, and they'd likely beg to see Mickey Mouse at Walt Disney World. But for Ffion Tynan, the answer was very different. In 2012, during a family holiday, she politely declined a visit to the Disney parks in Orlando, opting instead for a day at the kids' holiday club. The activity? Golf.
Tynan's decision to choose golf over Disney sparked a passion that would eventually lead her to turn professional. Fast forward to 2026, and the 22-year-old Welsh golfer has earned her spot on the Ladies European Tour (LET) through qualifying school in Morocco. But it wasn't always a straightforward path.
A Stubborn Decision at Eight
'I was stubborn and said I wasn't going,' Tynan recalled. 'I ended up doing the kids' camp for the day.' The coach noticed her talent and encouraged her parents to keep her playing. Her dad laughed, remembering her as the little girl in gymnastics with flowery outfits, now choosing to play a sport none of her family had grown up with.
A Family Affair
Tynan's love for golf became a family affair. 'Up until 2021, we didn't go on a holiday that didn't include golf,' she explained. 'We'd go to Florida, play events, and then visit Disney World or Discovery Cove. It was like a family holiday within a golf competition.'
Education and Golf: A Perfect Balance
Tynan's passion for golf led her to pursue her education in the United States, first at the University of Arkansas and then the University of Missouri. 'I was always one of the youngest in the bigger tournaments,' she said. 'I looked up to older players and saw them go to America, which sounded cool. My mom is a teacher, so I was definitely getting a degree.'
Influences and Heroes
Tynan credits tennis legend Venus Williams and golfing hero Charley Hull for inspiring her. 'I used to run around on the course and watch her play, trying to swing like her,' she said. 'It's cool to see her still around after influencing me at a young age. I want to influence the next generation too.'
The Road to Professional Golf
Tynan's journey to becoming a professional golfer was a long one, beginning when she was nine years old. 'I did four years in college and went to Q-school, knowing that if I did well, I'd turn pro,' she said. 'I'm proud of myself for accomplishing that.'
Looking Ahead
The 2026 LET season starts in Saudi Arabia, but Tynan won't be in the field due to her playing rights. She's eagerly awaiting her tour debut, which will be the culmination of 14 years of hard work. 'I'm really excited to get started,' she said. 'I want to show that a little girl from a small town in Wales can do it too.'
A Controversial Take?
Some might argue that choosing golf over Disney at eight was a missed opportunity for magical memories. But for Tynan, it was the start of a unique and fulfilling journey. What do you think? Do you agree or disagree? Share your thoughts in the comments!
