Can JP Pietersen Steer the Sharks to Glory? A former Springbok teammate believes JP Pietersen is the right man to lead the Sharks permanently, but can he overcome the challenges ahead? Let's dive in!
Following John Plumtree's departure, JP Pietersen, the 2007 Rugby World Cup-winning winger, stepped up as the interim head coach for the Durban-based side. He's set to finish the 2025/26 season at the helm. While the Sharks are reviewing their coaching structure, ex-Springbok Adrian Jacobs is confident in Pietersen's abilities.
Jacobs is impressed with Pietersen's early impact. He noted, "Everyone knew it wasn’t going to be easy for him to take over a team that had already lost six of its previous seven matches in the URC." Pietersen's approach, especially in their Champions Cup victory against Saracens (28-23), focused on making Sharks fans proud.
But here's where it gets controversial... Jacobs, a former player himself, finds the kick-heavy tactics employed by South African teams, including the Sharks, somewhat frustrating. However, he acknowledges the team's strength in having two top scrum-halves, Grant Williams and Jaden Hendrikse, who can effectively utilize these tactics.
Jacobs believes Pietersen can shift the Sharks away from these tactics and get more out of players like Andre Esterhuizen and Ethan Hooker. He suggests, "I just feel we need to try to get the ball to Ethan Hooker at outside centre a little bit more by playing less direct and not asking Andre Esterhuizen to carry the ball into the midfield all the time."
Pietersen's rise through the Sharks ranks and his respect within the union are notable. Jacobs witnessed his impact firsthand at an U20s match. He observed how Pietersen and his management team managed to motivate the experienced players, who are mostly Springboks. He believes Pietersen deserves a permanent coaching role, stating, "He doesn’t have to back down at all from the challenges that await him, and he has already shown that he has a plan with the team to make them competitive again."
The Sharks face a tough Champions Cup schedule, including matches against Sale Sharks and Clermont. They'll also have coastal derby fixtures against the Stormers. Jacobs believes that reaching the knockout stages of the URC would solidify Pietersen's case for the permanent head coach position.
