This collaboration is aimed at enhancing the Lakers' basketball operations as they look to elevate their own performance on the court.
In an engaging discussion with reporters before a match against the Golden State Warriors, Rob Pelinka, the Lakers’ president of basketball operations and general manager, shared insights into this new partnership. This marks the first time he has spoken publicly since the official valuation of the Lakers reached an astounding $10 billion following the acquisition by Dodgers owner Mark Walter in late October.
Pelinka expressed enthusiasm about having external advocates like the Dodgers. He noted, "It’s been fantastic to have allies who can provide insights based on the impressive success the Dodgers have achieved. It’s invaluable to tap into Andrew Friedman’s expertise and learn from their best practices."
Andrew Friedman, the 49-year-old president of baseball operations for the Dodgers, has been credited with transforming the team since joining in 2014, shortly after Walter took ownership from Frank McCourt in 2012. Pelinka praised Friedman, stating, "He possesses incredible intelligence and has done a remarkable job leading the Dodgers to championships. Having someone like him to consult on various aspects, whether it’s roster or staff decisions, has proven to be an exceptional resource."
Beyond his connection with Friedman, Pelinka emphasized the collaborative discussions involving himself, Walter, and Jeanie Buss, the acting governor of the Lakers. They have explored ways for Walter to bolster the team’s future strategies starting this summer. Buss is expected to continue in her role for at least four additional seasons post-2025-26, ensuring continuity in leadership.
Pelinka elaborated, "When Mark acquired the team, Jeanie and I engaged in a thorough exploration of areas where he aims to expand and take bold steps forward. The Dodgers serve as a prime example and guiding light for us. We are still working through our offseason strategy and potential additions, but we anticipate some positive transformations ahead."
While Pelinka did mention that one of the anticipated changes involves adopting aspects of the Dodgers’ draft process and organizational structure, he clarified the Lakers' power dynamics during this transition. "The leadership will primarily come from me and Jeanie, with full support from Mark," he stated confidently.
Interestingly, the Lakers' front office operates with fewer personnel compared to other NBA teams. Since Magic Johnson's unexpected resignation in 2019, Pelinka has been the key decision-maker, supported by Kurt Rambis in a senior advisory role. The front office was further streamlined in November, when the team made the decision to let go of Joey Buss, the former alternate governor and vice president of research and development, along with Jesse Buss, who held the position of assistant general manager, alongside several scouting department members.
Pelinka pointed out the Lakers’ intent to mirror the Dodgers' effective front office model. He remarked, "The Dodgers have established a robust front office without sparing any expense in their pursuit of excellence. We aim to follow that lead and enhance our own executive team."
As the trade deadline approaches, Pelinka also discussed the Lakers’ strategy regarding trades and roster adjustments for the upcoming summer. With three future first-round picks and an estimated cap space nearing $50 million, the Lakers are positioned to make significant moves.
Regarding the recent trade of Gabe Vincent and a second-round pick to the Atlanta Hawks for Luke Kennard, Pelinka stated, "Acquiring the best shooter in the game at this point in the season is a tremendous opportunity, and we took full advantage of it."
He further commented on the team’s approach leading up to the trade deadline: "We were proactive, and part of being aggressive means making tough decisions, including rejecting offers that may not align with our long-term goals. Sometimes, saying no to a tempting short-term fix is a stronger move than jumping at immediate opportunities that could disrupt our vision."
Discussing the Lakers' positioning for the summer, he noted, "The dual-apron system implemented by the league has proven to be quite stringent. Some teams have ventured beyond the second apron and found themselves in challenging situations. We recognize the importance of maintaining flexibility, as it will benefit us in the upcoming offseason. As teams face difficulties, we anticipate players becoming available who might fit well within our plans."
Lastly, Pelinka mentioned the Lakers' interest in exploring the buyout market, indicating, "We are currently assessing the potential for filling our 15th roster spot and will likely make a decision soon."
