Robert Wun's Spring 2026 Couture: Fashion as a Form of Protection
Boldly stepping into the spotlight, Robert Wun’s latest collection for Spring 2026 challenges the norms of fashion, embodying a unique blend of artistry and armor. This season has showcased a remarkable array of couture designs, with styles ranging from the delicately lightweight chiffon suits by Chanel to Wun’s dramatic bridal gown. This striking piece, adorned with approximately three million glass beads, is not only visually stunning but also weighs an astonishing 92 pounds.
Wun’s creative narrative ventures into the realms of dystopia and science fiction, vividly illustrated in his runway show held at the Lido cabaret. The backdrop featured a captivating display of video monitors projecting turbulent storm clouds and vivid flashes of lightning, setting a dramatic tone for the presentation.
The designer exhibits a penchant for bold silhouettes characterized by oversized collars that envelop the face, dazzling crystal masks, exaggerated breastplates, and aerodynamic hats. His collection also includes sharply pointed shoulders, flowing fishtail skirts, and whimsical streamers. Notably, some outfits feature swords piercing the heart, contributing to an overall aesthetic that is simultaneously sculptural, reminiscent of witchcraft, and evoking themes of Western and warrior styles.
At first glance, one might mistake Wun's creations for products of artificial intelligence due to their surreal surface designs. Some garments appear akin to molten metal, while others resemble intricately crafted 3D-printed sculptures, complemented by quirky accessories like cuff bracelets sprouting additional hands.
Leading up to the show, the Hong Kong-born designer reflected on his early work, revisiting his graduate collection from the London College of Fashion in 2012. He described that period as one where his imagination was "wilder," and his exploration of ideas was more unrestrained.
Through this showcase, Wun articulates the internal conflicts faced by designers today and the challenges of building a successful business in a world fraught with uncertainty.
"Every creative individual today is akin to a warrior… constantly fighting battles internally and externally," he expressed. "I hope people can understand the significance of couture, where designers can truly express their identities."
Couture, often considered the pinnacle of high fashion, requires immense courage to pursue, and Robert Wun undoubtedly stands among the most daring designers in this elite realm.
