The 'Brady Bunch' House: A Los Angeles Landmark! | Exploring the Iconic TV Home (2026)

The iconic 'Brady Bunch' house, a beloved symbol of 1960s family life, has been granted a special status by the LA City Council. But here's the twist: this modest home, used for exterior shots of the popular sitcom, has now become an official Los Angeles landmark!

On Wednesday, the council unanimously voted to protect this San Fernando Valley residence, known for its shingle-and-stone exterior and peaked roof. It's a decision that has sparked both celebration and controversy.

The 'Brady Bunch' house, used for exterior shots from 1969 to 1974, has become a cultural icon. Interior scenes were filmed on a soundstage, but the house itself has become a magnet for fans, who recognize it instantly from the theme song's famous line, "the youngest one in curls."

This designation means the 1959 home is now protected from major renovations or demolition. However, it doesn't completely prohibit these actions. If the owners ever decide to make significant changes, they'll face a design review, and the Cultural Heritage Commission can intervene to find preservation solutions.

The nonprofit LA Conservancy, which pushed for this landmark status, is thrilled. CEO Adrian Scott Fine believes fans have a deep connection to this property. "People make a pilgrimage to see it," he said. "To have it designated like this is truly special."

The house's journey to landmark status is an interesting one. In 2018, it went on the market and sparked a bidding war, eventually selling to HGTV for $3.5 million - $1.6 million over the listing price. HGTV then renovated the house, adding trademark elements from the TV set, like the wood-paneled living room and the iconic orange-and-green kitchen. This process was documented in the HGTV miniseries, 'A Very Brady Renovation.'

So, what do you think? Is this landmark status a fitting tribute to a cultural icon, or an unnecessary restriction on private property? Let us know in the comments! We'd love to hear your thoughts on this controversial decision.
