In a bold and unapologetic move, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has declared that the Department of War will sever all ties with Harvard University for military education programs, fellowships, and certifications starting in the 2026–27 academic year. Hegseth, himself a Harvard alumnus with a master’s degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government, acknowledged the military’s long-standing relationship with the university. 'Too many faculty members openly disdain our military,' he said, 'casting our armed forces in a negative light while silencing dissenting voices—all at the cost of exorbitant tuition. He criticized much of the Ivy League for what he described as 'pervasive institutional bias' and a lack of viewpoint diversity, accusing these institutions of 'coddling toxic ideologies' that undermine the military’s mission. He announced that the Pentagon will evaluate all existing graduate programs for active-duty service members at Ivy League and civilian universities to ensure they provide cost-effective, strategic education for future leaders.
The announcement follows President Donald Trump’s ongoing battle with Harvard, which includes a $1 billion lawsuit and efforts to withhold federal funding over allegations of antisemitism and promotion of 'woke' ideology. The university has countered with its own lawsuit, claiming the administration’s actions amount to an unconstitutional 'pressure campaign.'
Hegseth also took aim at Harvard’s campus culture, alleging partnerships with the Chinese Communist Party and an environment that tolerates antisemitism while prioritizing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. 'Why should the War Department support an institution that undermines our nation’s principles?' he asked. 'The answer is clear: We should not, and we will not.'
Here’s where it gets even more contentious: Hegseth suggested that Harvard’s influence has been detrimental to the military’s warrior ethos. 'For too long, we’ve sent our best officers to Harvard, hoping they’d return with a deeper understanding of our mission,' he said. 'Instead, they’ve come back echoing globalist and radical ideologies that weaken our fighting force.'
